UKRAINIAN DESIGNER AT PITTI
Corruption stampato su una maglietta non dice un granché. Se non fossi stata là, a Kiev, in mezzo ai protestanti. E quando sono andata a Pitti nell'area dedicata all'Ucraina quella scritta sulla felpa di velluto disegnata da Ksenia Schnaider ha avuto il suo significato. Ad inizio anno ero a Kiev ospite di un imprenditore che vorrebbe realizzare una sfilata dentro il mercato coperto, una splendida struttura dove frutta verdura sono esposte quasi con criteri fashion, in base al colore e alla forma. Era tutto interessante, certo, ma io volevo essere là insieme al popolo che chiede democrazia. In Piazza Maidan, nella neve fitta e nel gelo profondo. Fra i volti della gente comune e le divise della polizia che caricava. Così molto del mio tempo l'ho impegnato a osservare la protesta e a fotografare le persone. Oggi gli scontri sono di nuovo violenti, tre morti e numerosi arresti. La polizia con gli scudi antisommossa ha scagliato sulle persone gas lacrimogeni e proiettili di gomma. Cos'ha a che fare con la moda, direte voi. La moda è rivoluzione. Quando si sta nel lato scomodo della vita. "E' un momento difficile per la nostra gente - mi dice la designer ucraina Julie Paskal, laureata in architettura, i suoi abiti li vende LuisaViaRoma - stanno tirando fuori quello che era dentro di loro, hanno scoperto che possono farcela, hanno trovato la loro identità".
"Corruption" printed on a t-shirt doesn't mean too much. Or it wouldn't have meant a lot if I hadn't been there in Kiev during the protests. And when I went to Pitti in the area dedicated to Ukraine those words written by Ksenia Schnaider on a velvet sweatshirt meant something to me. Yes, I was in Kiev a few months ago. I was invited there by a businessman who wanted to throw a fashion show in the covered market, where fruits and vegetables are displayed and sold based on colors and shapes. Like a fashion show. Don't get me wrong, everything was really interesting, but something else caught my attention. It was the people protesting in Maiden Square, half-covered by the snow and surrounded by the winter chill and the policemen ready to charge. So I spent most of my time watching them and taking pictures.Today the uprising still goes on. Three persons died and a lot more were arrested. The police officers threw cobblestones and teargas and grenades at them. What has this in common with fashion, you might ask. Well, fashion is revolution. "It's a tough moment for our people - said Ukrainian designer Julie Paskal - because their are pulling out what they had inside. They discovered that they can actually do it, and finally they have found their own identity."
